It all started in late 1952 when a hobbyist in California entered a painting in a local art contest. Third prize was awarded to a cubist abstract named Abstract No. One. Many admired this abstract throughout the day. It wasn't until the end of that day that the judges found out it was the product of a kit. The judges were so embarrassed that they stayed mum refusing to comment. So began the paint by number craze!

The new art craze expanded the long held views of what defines art. Putting paint brushes in the hands of millions in post war America propelled many to later become patrons of museums and other centers of cultural activities.

This large collection was obtained around the United States over a period of 40 years with many of the pieces signed with original frames and was donated to the Staunton Augusta Art Center by Anthea Smith and the late Bert Smith. The Staunton Augusta Art Center is pleased to offer these unique paint by numbers works for sale.
