DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: The Staunton Augusta Art Center is one of the longest operating nonprofit cultural organizations in the City of Staunton and surrounding County of Augusta, Virginia. Founded in 1961, the Art Center’s mission is two-fold: (1) to offer diverse experiences in the creation and appreciation of the visual arts to children, adults, and visitors to the area and (2) to support artists by hiring them to teach as well as to exhibit and sell their work. The Art Center and its state-of-the-art gallery are located in The R.R. Smith Center for History & Art at 20 South New Street in historic downtown Staunton.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: the Executive Director (“ED”) reports to the Board of Directors and serves as the public face of the organization. Duties include:

  • Day-to-day operations such as gallery management, website updates, social media posting, greeting the public

  • Office management including, but not limited to:      

  • Bookkeeping

  • Mailings

  • Membership record keeping

  • Coordinating building care & maintenance with other member organizations and the Smith Center Foundation Board

  • Planning and executing large and small scale events and programs such as Art in the Park, gallery exhibits, classes, and annual fundraising events.

  • Supervising all staff and volunteers

  • Cultivating and maintaining community partnerships

  • Creating monthly reports to Board of Trustees

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  the ED position requires exceptional organizational leadership skills, excellent written and oral communication skills and a proven ability to partner with staff, donors, and volunteers. The ideal candidate will bring a creative vision for the Art Center and have experience and/or skills:

  • Budget Development

  • Organizational Management

  • Project Management (long and short term)

  • Website Maintenance

  • Basic IT management

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), email communication, and marketing material development


  • Experience in the non-profit sector

  • Experience recruiting/hiring/supervising new employees 

  • Experience working collaboratively with a Board of Trustees 

  • Grant Writing

  • Familiarity with current arts management strategies

  • Social Media Management

SALARY:The ED is compensated based on experience. Salary and benefits are negotiable in the range of $43,000-$47,000.
